Pitt in Contention for Providence Transfer Jared Bynum
PITTSBURGH -- The Pitt Panthers lost their top four guards to graduation this offseason, including their two best ball-handlers. As a result, the Panthers are going to turn to the portal to fill their remaining roster spots.
One of the players Pitt's coaching staff wants to fill one of the open roster spots is former Providence point guard Jared Bynum. The Panthers join Florida and Stanford in pursuing one of the steadiest and most productive point guards from the Big East over the past two years, according to recruiting insider Andrew Slater.
Ed Cooley's departure from Providence for Georgetown sent a few talented Friars rushing to the transfer portal, including Bynum. A former All-Big East second team and Sixth Man of the Year selection, Bynum owns a career assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.33 while averaging 10.3 points per game.
His 3-point shooting took a major dive this season (31.9%) after he posted a career-high in percentage (41.3%) and attempts (3.6 per game) in 2021-22, but he did shoot nearly three points better from 2-point range. He still averaged 4.3 assists per game as well and made a career-high 83% of his free throws.
Both his career arc and playing style looks strikingly similar to Nelly Cummings', who was a crucial asset as Pitt's offensive catalyst from the starting point guard spot.
