PITTSBURGH -- The Pitt Panthers suffered a frustrating and pivotal loss on the road to Clemson, 69-62 and it dropped them further down the ACC standings with just three games left before the start of the conference tournament.

The Panthers entered the day in a three-way tied for fifth in the ACC with Syracuse and N.C. State. But after their latest loss and the results of three other contests around the league, Pitt fell into another three-way, this one for seventh place, with idential 9-8 records to the Wolfpack and Florida State.

The Seminoles moved up into this tie and N.C. State fell back into it by virtue of a 90-83 win for the Seminoles at the Donald L. Tucker Center in Tallahassee, Florida. Syracuse's 13-point victory over Virginia Tech at home gave them a 10-8 record as well.

The Tigers rocketed up into a tie for third with Wake Forest after sitting in eighth place just a week ago. The Demon Deacons were upset by Notre Dame on the road, 70-65 to drop their record in league play to 10-7.

The Panthers entered the day in position for the sixth seed in the coming ACC Tournament but now Syracuse holds the sixth seed by half of a game over Pitt, who holds a tiebreaker of N.C. State and has yet to play Florida State.

The Panthers sit in seventh place and would still hold a single bye , then play the winner of Louisville-Virginia Tech in the second round of the ACC Tournament if the season ended today. Pitt would earn a rematch with Clemson in the quarterfinals if they won that game.

The conference tournament is looking increasingly more important to the Panthers' NCAA Tournament chances as they slide down the ACC standings.
