PITTSBURGH -- Hours before the Pitt Panthers took the floor to play their First Four game in the NCAA Tournament, they lost a member of their current roster. John Hugley, a former four-star recruit and All-ACC Honorable Mention in 2022, announced that morning that he had opted to transfer and use his remaining eligibility elsewhere.

Every Panther - from coaches to players - has been unceasingly supportive of Hugley's decision to take time away from the program to rehabilitate his mental and physical health. Starting guard Jamarius Burton continued to be supportive of Hugley following the announcement that he would transfer.

"For me personally, I wish nothing but the best for him," Burton told Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette. "Obviously, we wish we would have had him this season and there were some things that transpired this season personally that affected his ability to be available for us but we just continue to wish him nothing but the best as he moves on with his career."

After suffering a knee injury during the preseason, Hugley played in eight games, averaging eight points and 3.6 rebounds per contest. He had not been practicing and or attending games ever since. He posted regular videos on social media from his hometown of Cleveland, Ohio, where he was working out with his high school coaches and teammates.
