DAYTON -- While the Pitt Panthers tried to kill the hours before their NCAA Tournament matchup with Mississippi State, they got some bad news.

The Panthers' leading scorer and rebounder from two years ago announced that he intends to transfer from Pitt. John Hugley, a 6'9 junior from Cleveland, Ohio, who averaged 14.8 points and 7.9 rebounds per game in the 2021-22 season, told On3 the news first and confirmed it on Twitter

Hugley, a former four-star recruit, has three years of eligibility left. He played just eight games this season, averaging eight points and 3.8 rebounds per game while shooting 47% from the field. He spent most of the season away from the team, rehabilitating his physical and mental health. A knee injury sidelined him for most of the season and he never looked like the same player upon returning to the court. He earned All-ACC honorable mention honors in 2021.

Hugley later released a statement on Instagram.
