Pitt's Jeff Capel, Jamarius Burton Earn More Accolades
PITTSBURGH -- ACC Coach of the Year and first-team All-ACC honors were not enough for Pitt Panthers head coach Jeff Capel and his starting guard Jamarius Burton. More postseason accolades came their way after the ACC media honored the two leaders of Pitt's turnaround from conference cellar-dweller to contender for the regular season title.
Capel and Burton were Pitt's only representatives in the Associated Press ACC awards. Capel earned Coach of the Year distinction again, this time from the AP, and Burton was named a second-team All-ACC player. Burton was voted a first-team player by the ACC media after averaging 15.6 points, 4.9 rebounds and 4.2 assists this season.
Capel was the first Pitt coach ever to win ACC Coach of the Year and just the third to win conference coach of the year. Ben Howland and Jamie Dixon won Big East Coach of the Year once each during each of their stays in Pittsburgh. Capel was also named a finalist for the Ben Jobe National Coach of the Year, presented annually to Division I's best minority coach. The recipient of the 2023 award will be chosen from a list of 25 finalists and announced in March, in Houston, Texas at the site of the men's NCAA Basketball Championship.
Capel guided Pitt to a 10-win improvement from a year ago, which is tied for the fourth best in program history, while the eight-win improvement in conference play is the best all-time at Pitt.
