Pitt Showing Interest in ACC Transfers
PITTSBURGH -- With their season having ended last weekend with a 84-73 loss to No. 3 Xavier in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, the Pitt Panthers have already hit the recruiting trail. The high school portion of their 2023 class has already been filled out, but the coaching staff will still be searching the transfer portal for ways to fill out their remaining three scholarships.
Jae'Lyn Withers, a graduate transfer from Louisville, is one of those players the Panthers are eying, according to a report from Jake Weingarten of Stockrisers. He says 10 other high majors and many more are interested in recruiting the former All-ACC Freshman team honoree.
At 6'8 and 230 pounds, Withers would give Pitt some much-needed muscle in the front court while not encroaching on the playing time of young centers Federiko Federiko and Guillermo Diaz Graham. He averaged 5.3 rebounds per game last season and shot 41.7% from 3-point range. With John Hugley on his way out, the Panthers could use some reinforcements up front and Withers is a perfect candidate to fill that need.
Dontrez Styles, a 6'6 sophomore guard who has decided to transfer out of the North Carolina program he spent two seasons with, is also on the Panthers' radar. Pitt was one of the 14 Division I programs to extend an offer to him coming out of high school.
Stylez is a former top-100 recruit in the class of 2021 for the Tar Heels but struggled to find the floor during his first two years in Chapel Hill. He averaged less than six minutes per game over 45 appearances during his freshman and sophomore seasons. He's struggled to shoot 3-pointers but has shown flashes of strong rebounding as a bigger guard while playing in limited action.
Coming out of high school, Stylez was tabbed as a high-motor defender and rebounder with impressive athletic ability. He made his living offensively in the paint and shooting from midrange and is looking for a chance to show off those skills for a program with room for him to play. Seeing as the Panthers will lose their top four guards from this past season, they fit that bill.
