PITTSBURGH -- After helping lead the 2022-23 Pitt Panthers to the program's most successful season in more than half a decade, assistant coach Tim O'Toole is seeking to step up to a head coaching job, according to a report from Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette

O'Toole, heralded as a crucial part of Pitt's transfer portal and high school recruiting over the past five years as a member of head coach Jeff Capel's staff, was unavailable for comment, but a spokesperson from the program confirmed to the Post Gazette that he does have interest in becoming a head coach again.

O'Toole applied for the vacant job at Manhattan College, according to Hiles. The Jaspers lost their former head coach, Steve Masiello, two weeks prior to the start of the season. O'Toole was also contacted by the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay for their open head coaching job before the Phenix program landed on former Wyoming assistant, Sundance Wicks, they announced last week.

O'Toole has a lengthy resume that includes assistant coaching stops at California, Stanford, Seton Hall, Duke, Syracuse, Iona, Army and Fordham. He served as director of basketball operations for the Orange in 2013, when they made the Final Four.

O'Toole's been a head coach before and a successful one at his alma mater, Fairfield. He led the Stags to a 112-120 record and earned MAAC Coach of the Year honors in 2004. He made the conference championship game and NIT with them in 2003. O'Toole also served as interim head coach for a game during the 2020-21 season while at Pitt, when Capel was in quarantine with Covid.

As the assistant coach who works primarily with the Panthers' frontcourt, O'Toole has helped develop players like Justin Champagnie and Mouhamadou Gueye, two former Pitt players now in the NBA G League. The rapid development of underclassmen big men Guillermo Diaz Graham and Federiko Federiko is another feather in O'Toole's cap.
