PITTSBURGH -- It all started innocently enough, NFL insider Dov Kleiman releasing a list of the top 10 cornerbacks in the league, as voted on by a selection of executives, players, scouts and coaches and ended with former Pitt Panthers great Darrelle Revis and Asante Samuel engaged in a war of words.

Revis was not Samuel's original target, but the Pittsburgh native and Pitt alumnus fell into his crosshairs when he went after a different Jets corner, Sauce Gardner, who was ranked second in this iteration of the cornerback rankings. Samuel claims the "New York media" helped both Gardner and Revis earn reputations beyond their talent.

"The New York media will take your career to another level," Samuel wrote on Twitter. "It's the NY media what did Revis do so special. I'll wait ... It's documented want great cornerbacks, check the stats."

Samuel claims Gardner's rookie season, during which he won Defensive Rookie of the Year, was not as good as Seahawk's corner Tariq Woolen's campaign. Gardner responded simply with "You gots to relax."

Revis then fired back, saying Samuel is simply bitter over a career in which he was never considered one of the elite at his position.

“Quit being a hater when it comes to rising stars at the cornerback position,” Revis responded. “Be mad at the voters who never considered you ‘shutdown.’"

Revis also took a couple of shots at Samuel's playing career. He recalled a time when Jets head coach Rex Ryan said in a pregame meeting before playing Samuel and the Falcons that they could easily attack him with double moves.

"(I) never was inspired to watch film, but something does jog my memory. I do remember we played (the) Falcons and Rex Ryan made a highlight clip of (you) being double-moved on almost every single route. I recall Rex saying to receivers in our weekly team meetings … ‘If he lines up across from you, double-move him every time.'”

Then he reminded Samuel of his dropped interception during the fourth quarter of Super Bowl XLII, which could have ended Eli Manning and the Giant's comeback bid and clinched a perfect season for the New England Patriots.

“A high school cornerback could have picked this pass off,” Revis told Samuel over Twitter, with a video attatched. “This goes to show you ain’t elite. Could have been a hero but you choked and cost your team and Tom Brady another Super Bowl.”
