Pitt Extends Basketball Series With West Virginia
PITTSBURGH -- The Pitt Panthers and West Virginia Mountaineers will keep their rivalry alive on the hardwood for a little longer, the two programs announced this week.
Pitt and West Virginia revealed that the two programs had agreed to extend the Backyard Brawl series through the 2027-28 season, adding four more games to the series that was set to expire after this season's game.
“The Backyard Brawl game is one of the most anticipated matchups on the schedule each year for the two fan bases,” Pitt head coach Jeff Capel said. “These kinds of games are what makes college athletics so special. We are excited to extend the series and look forward to four more matchups that will have both fan bases eagerly awaiting the day tickets go on sale.”
Pitt will host games at the Petersen Events Center during the 2024-25 and 2026-27 seasons and make return trips to the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown, West Virginia during the 2025-26 and 2027-28 seasons.
The Panthers captured their first win in the Backyard Brawl since 2012 early last December. Blake Hinson made a school-record nine 3-pointers in an 80-63 victory for Pitt at the WVU Coliseum.
The Panthers are 89-101 all-time against West Virginia and own a 56-36 record in games played in Pittsburgh. Pitt has won seven of the 12 matchups played at the Petersen Events Center.
