Two Former Pitt OL Cut from NFL Teams

Former Pitt Panthers Jaryd Jones-Smith and Jimmy Morrissey were cut by their NFL squads.

PITTSBURGH -- A pair of former Pitt Panther has become casualties of NFL roster cuts as the deadline to trim 37 players from training camp rosters came and went.

The Houston Texans released former Pitt starting center and captain, Jimmy Morrissey this week, according to a report from Aaron Wilson of KPRC2 in Houston and the Washington Commanders cut ties with Jaryd Jones-Smith, who they brought in this spring.

The addition of former Steelers offensive lineman Kendrick Green, who the Texans traded for hours before announcing they had cut Morrissey, likely pushed the former Panther out of his spot.

Morrissey, a former walk-on at Pitt, was drafted by the Las Vegas Raiders in the seventh round of the 2021 NFL Draft. He was signed to the practice squad after being released in the final round of roster cuts. Morrissey then went on to spend two seasons with the Texans working his way up to the active roster in 2021 and 2022

Jones-Smith signed with the Houston Texans as an undrafted free agent in 2018 and bounced around between Miami, San Francisco, Las Vegas and Baltimore, appearing in six total games split evenly between the Ravens and Raiders, before joining Washington this spring.
