Pitt Loses Two Starters to Injury
PITTSBURGH -- The Pitt Panthers' were muddling through a rough third quarter when things went from bad to worse quickly.
After stopping Syracuse on the goal line for what could have been a pivotal moment in the game, the Panthers followed it up by losing two starters - defensive lineman Devin Danielson and tight end Gavin Bartholomew - to injury late in the third quarter.
Danielson was stepped on - it appeared accidentally - by a Syracuse offensive lineman after making a crucial stop on third and goal from inside the five-yard line. He was helped back to the locker room by Pitt trainers.
Bartholomew was hurt on the ensuing possession for Pitt, just two plays later. Christian Veilleux lofted a pick-six to Syracuse's Jayden Bellamy and Bartholomew was down on the field holding his ankle, appearing to be in a lot of pain. He went back to the locker room with trainers as well and was later spotted on crutches on the field.
Danielson's accounted for 13 tackles and 1.5 sacks over eight appearances this season. Bartholomew has been one of the better big-play threats in the country this year, hauling in 18 catches for 326 total yards and a touchdown.
