PITTSBURGH -- The Pitt Panthers could have a major challenge on their hands the next time they have to face the Duke Blue Devils, who are making some major changes after a coaching change this offseason.

One of Pitt's rivals from inside the ACC, Duke has landed one of the biggest fish available in the transfer portal, particularly at the quarterback position, when former Texas quarterback Maalik Murphy announced that he would head exit the transfer portal and head to Durham, he told ESPN's Pete Thamel.

Murphy appeared in seven games this past season for the Longhorns, completing 40 pf 71 passes for three touchdowns and three interceptions. He did not play and redshirted during the 2022 season, his freshman year.

Murphy was ranked as high as the No. 7 player in California and No. 8 quarterback in the class of 2022. He was a consensus top-250 prospect in the class as well coming out of Junipero Serra High School in Inglewood, Califo

The Blue Devils are undergoing a major overhaul this offseason after a head coaching change that triggered some full-scale roster turnover.

Duke hired a familiar face to lead them after Mike Elko left to take the vacant head coaching job at Texas A&M - former Miami defensive coordinator and head coach Manny Diaz. Now Murphy will serve as the heir apparent to Riley Leonard, the wildly successful Blue Devil quarterback who has since transferred to Notre Dame

The Panthers are set to play the Blue Devils just twice over the next seven seasons - at home in 2027 and on the road in 2029.
