PITTSBURGH -- The Pitt Panthers are well into spring practices and beginning to get a better sense of what their 2023 squad will look like come this fall. Still, the Panthers are not completely whole yet, as an important reserve from their defensive secondary continues to work his way back from a season-ending injury suffered in Week 4 of the 2022 season.

Rashad Battle, a converted safety now playing corner, injured his leg against Rhode Island and did not return to action. Pitt head coach Pat Narduzzi said Battle is close to returning to action but trainers and the coaching staff won't rush the process.

“He’s doing good," Narduzzi said, "He’s a little bit banged up right now. He’s close but we’re just being smart.”

Battle was poised for a big junior season after appearing in just eight games over his first two seasons. Battle was working in as with the second string defense and playing meaningful snaps before going down with the injury. He has 19 career tackles to his name.
