Pitt WR Konata Mumpfield Tabbed as Jewel of Transfer Portal
PITTSBURGH — Pro Football Network has tabbed Pittsburgh Panthers receiver Konata Mumpfield as a potential breakout star for this coming season. Oliver Hodgkinson called Mumpfield, “one of the jewels of the transfer portal” and said that he is set to emerge as a top 2023 Draft prospect.
Mumpfield was already expected to contribute to the Panthers’ deep collection of pass-catchers after transferring from Akron. But the fact that last year’s leading receiver Jordan Addison will explore other options in the transfer portal only compounds the pressure on him to perform.
Hodgkinson praised Mumpfield for his play against stiff competition. He cited a seven-reception, 67-yard, one-touchdown performance from Mumpfield against Ohio State as one of the prime examples of how his agility plays on the field.

“Against Ohio State, he tallied 7 receptions for 67 yards and a score in the ‘Horseshoe,’” Hodgkinson wrote. “The touchdown showcased some of his exceptional movement ability for a 6’1″ receiver, putting the defense on ice with his change of direction in the backfield before leaking out for a simple short score.”
This description fits Mumpfield’s profile, according to Hodginkson, who said he has the right size — 6-foot-1 and 180 pounds — and skill set to be a successful slot receiver at the next level. Hodgkinson also said that Mumpfield’s experience as a defensive back in high school is reflected in his ball skills.
“Mumpfield uses a combination of head fakes, body control, fluid hips, and change-of-direction ability to shake defensive players out of their skin. He can attack leverage. He can be physical. Furthermore, the Pitt WR has demonstrated quick and light feet.”
In addition to the extra attention that defenses can afford to pay him, Mumpfield will face a couple of challenges this coming season. Not only is he entering a new school and system, but the Panthers are breaking in a new offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach. Kenny Pickett, the record-setting signal-caller that led Pitt to an ACC title and top-15 finish last season, is also gone.
But Mumpfield is a reason for optimism among all of that uncertainty and there is still plenty of depth behind him. Still, he’s the most talented of the group and should rocket up draft boards this season, according to Hodgkinson.
“Mumpfield has the skill set to be special as the leading receiver in this Pitt offense,” he wrote. “And he has the capacity to be special in this 2023 NFL Draft class.”
