Damar Hamlin Honored by Pittsburgh Mayor
PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh native and former Pitt Panthers safety Damar Hamlin was back in his hometown this weekend while he awaits the start of his third training camp with the Buffalo Bills.
In between running charity events around the city of Pittsburgh, including on Pitt's campus this past weekend, Hamlin was recognized by the city government for his athletic and philanthropic achievements. Mayor Ed Gainey declared July 9 "Damar Hamlin Day" over the weekend.
"Whereas, Mr. Hamlin's accomplishments serve as an inspiration to the youth of this nation," the statement from Mayor Gainey read. "Demonstrating that through hard work, determination and a commitment to excellence, individuals can achieve their dreams and make their mark on the world."
While completing a remarkable recovery from his on-field cardiac arrest, Hamlin has worked to raise awareness about and infrastructure to respond to similar events. His charitable organization, the Chasing M's Foundation, spent this weekend kicking off what they called The CPR Tour, which highlights the need for CPR training and the use of AEDs.
Hamlin and Chasing M's also hosted events for underprivileged youth from the region and a charity softball game featuring former Pitt football stars from across eras at Charles L. Cost Field on Pitt's campus in Oakland.
