Former Pitt C Steven Adams Suffers Season-Ending Injury
PITTSBURGH -- Former Pitt Panthers center Steven Adams' 2023 season is over before it has even begun.
Adams, who is still one of the highest-rated recruits to ever sign with Pitt, has suffered a knee injury that will keep him sidelined for all of the 2023-24 campaign. He attempted to heal his knee without surgery, but it was to no avail and he will now need a procedure to fix it.
The Grizzlies had hoped Adams could help them anchor what would once again be one of the NBA's best defenses alongside Jaren Jackson Jr. and Marcus Smart. But now they'll have to play all of their season without him and about a quarter of the season without suspended superstar point guard Ja Morant.
Adams spent just one year in Pittsburgh as a five-star recruit out of New Zealand, who ended up playing his high school ball at Notre Dame Preparatory School in Massachusetts. According to 247Sports, he is the highest-rated recruit to ever sign with Pitt since they began rating prospects in 2007. But he averaged just 7.2 points and 6.3 rebounds per game in his lone season with the Panthers before being drafted 12th overall by the Oklahoma City Thunder.
