PITTSBURGH -- Jeff Capel continues to land recruiting win after recruiting win. After rounding out his 2022 class with the addition of Dior Johnson, a four-star point guard from Southern California, Capel landed a commitment from another four-star guard. Carlton Carrington, a top-five player in Maryland and a top-100 recruit in the class of 2023 according to 247Sports, gave a verbal commitment to Capel and Pitt on Wednesday morning.

"It felt like a family [at Pitt]," Carrington said following his announcement on CBS Sports Network. "I'm coming to win."

Carrington, who will begin his senior year at St. Frances Academy in Baltimore this fall, holds just eight offers from DePaul, George Mason, George Washington, La Salle, Loyola Maryland, LSU, Pitt and Rutgers. Other Power Five schools - Arizona State, Maryland, Oklahoma State, Penn State and Virginia - showed interest but didn't offer.

"Carrington is a big combo-guard with terrific size and upside to his frame as he continues to fill out and build up his body," Adam Finkelstein of 247Sports said. "He is a fluid open floor playmaker with the ball and has a very good mid-range pull-up game in the half-court. He needs to keep getting more consistent as a three-point shooter, but long term he possesses potential as both a versatile scorer and playmaker. Defensively, he moves his feet well laterally and should be able to defend multiple positions, especially as he gets stronger. Overall, he's a late-blooming talented big combo-guard with a high ceiling."

Carrington is the second recruit to join the Panthers' 2023 class. One of John Hugley's old high school teammates, Marlon Barnes, a three-star small forward and a top-10 player in Ohio, is the only other 2023 commit.

It's still very early, but Pitt's 2023 class was already 29th in 247Sports' national rankings prior to Carrington's decision.
