Former Mustang Rice Wins Super Bowl LVIII, but Not at End
LAS VEGAS — The list of Super Bowl winners from SMU is a long one and it just got longer. Former Mustang Rashee Rice earned his spot on the list in Kansas City’s 25-22 overtime victory against San Francisco in Super Bowl LVIII. The second round rookie has come along way since his first days of training camp.
“The first day of training camp I threw up — and now I see why,” Rice said. “We just have to continue to run until we can’t any more — into that deep water. It’s like a heavyweight match out there, and it’s the last guy standing.”
Former Mustang Rashee Rice Playing Big Role in Chiefs Super Bowl Run
After tying the game at 19-19 with a late field goal, Rice and the Chiefs watched the 49ers eat up the first half of overtime and march down the field. But Kansas City’s defense held them to a field goal, giving Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs to win the game with a touchdown.
And that’s exactly what happened with Rice providing a pair of key catches, including a 13-yard catch on third and six to give Kansas City a first down in 49er territory.
“That’s probably the greatest feeling you can have in football,” Rice said. “My job is to catch every pass that Pat throws me. If he feels confident in me, we’ll feel confident in each other and be able to execute any play that we need to do.”
Six plays later, Patrick Mahomes connected with Mecole Hardman for a three yard touchdown and the Chiefs began celebrating their second-straight Super Bowl championship.
Rice ended the game with six catches for 39 yards, as well as two rushes for five yards.
“Just to be on the inside … last year I was just watching the Super Bowl — not knowing how much it really took to get to this point,” Rice said. “Last time I won anything like this was pee-wee football. I was 11 years old, and we won the ‘Super Bowl.’” This time Rice gets to celebrate winning the real thing.
