Series Primer: South Carolina vs UMass-Lowell

South Carolina begins its season later this afternoon when they take on the UMass-Lowell Riverhawks.

The South Carolina Gamecocks baseball team has waited 269 days to get their opportunity to wipe the program's first losing season since 1996 from their memory. That opportunity has finally arrived, as Carolina will take the baseball diamond later this afternoon against the UMass-Lowell Riverhawks. The Riverhawks finished two games under .500 last season, falling one game short of the NCAA Regionals as the America East Conference's automatic qualifier.

The Riverhawks, however, are returning a ton of experience on the mound and in the field. Eight of UMass-Lowell's nine primary starters in the field have returned for the 2023 season. This includes their top three batters, Robert Gallagher, Gerry Siracusa, and Fritz Genther, all of whom had a combined on-base and slugging percentage, or OPS, over .900 in 2022. 

On the mound, the Riverhawks see two of their three starting pitchers back in the fold for this Spring, with LJ Keevan, who won half of his games that ended with a decision, being projected as UMass-Lowell's Friday night starter.

With the Gamecocks having an objectively perceived easier non-conference slate this season, they'll want to make sure and take advantage early and often, starting on opening weekend.
