Gamecocks Sweep Series Against Bethune-Cookman Wildcats
The No. 20 ranked Gamecocks completed the series sweep against the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats by a score of 10-3 Saturday evening. Much like the other games of the three-game series, the Gamecocks struck first, going up 1-0 when Braylen Wimmer scored on an error and reached base on a single. Shortly after in the top of the second inning, the visiting Tigers tied the game, 1-1, after an Irvin Escobar RBI single; however, the tie was fleeting.
USC regained the lead and didn't give it back in the bottom of the inning when Caleb Denny smacked the grandest of all home runs, propelling the Gamecocks to a 5-1 lead. South Carolina would return for thirds in the next inning as Talmadge LeCroy doubled home Ethan Petry, bumping the score to 6-1. Adding on more damage in the fourth, Dylan Brewer and Denny walked to start the rally, and Wimmer singled the basses loaded, setting the stage for Gavin Casas and Cole Messina to record two fly-out RBIs, which made the lead 8-1.
The final runs for USC came in the bottom of the sixth inning. Wimmer led the inning off with a lead-off double, then later, Gavin Casas got hit by a pitch, and Messina stung a base hit to load the bases. Carolina then scored two runs from the rally on a Petry and LeCroy fly out and ground out, making the score 10-2.
Gamecock starting pitcher Jack Mahoney went six innings and allowed seven hits and two runs while issuing no walks and striking out nine, as the right-hander earned the victory and improved to 2-0 on the season. The Gamecocks improved to 16-1 on the season and will be back in action tomorrow, hosting Presbyterian. First pitch will be 7 p.m. at Founder Park.
