Gamecocks Remain No. 1 In Second Seeding Reveal

Per the committee, South Carolina is still the No. 1 overall seed for the NCAA Tournament.

Dawn Staley and the South Carolina Gamecocks fought back from an early deficit to topple the Tennessee Volunteers in Knoxville on Thursday night. The victory led to them remaining undefeated and earning at least a share of the SEC's regular season championship.

However, when the game reached halftime, the Gamecocks received some unsurprising yet promising news about their current position in the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament, as the selection committee revealed that South Carolina remains the No. 1 overall seed in the field.

Whether or not the Gamecocks win out over the next two and a half weeks, it doesn't seem like there's any real possibility that they'll be knocked off from the top perch, which leads to the following question: based on the current seeding, who could they face on their side of the bracket?

Right now, the Gamecocks could face off against either Virginia Tech, Iowa, or Michigan in their region, three teams with a combined record of 66-17 to this point in the season.

The most compelling hypothetical matchup out of that grouping would be South Carolina versus Iowa, due to each player possessing a national player of the year candidate in Aliyah Boston for the Gamecocks and Caitlin Clark for the Hawkeyes.

In the second current regional setup in Greenville, the Indiana Hoosiers and UConn Huskies, viewed as the No. 2 and 4 ranked teams in the AP poll, respectively, are slotted as the one and two seeds, meaning if the Gamecocks made it to the Final Four in this current setup, they could either face off against Hoosier superstar Mackenzie Holmes or play the UConn Huskies for the second time this season.

While the Gamecocks would be the favorite in every one of these matchups, no matter what the final bracket looks like, South Carolina won't have a complete cakewalk if they give themselves a shot to repeat as national champions.
