Gamecocks Make History With Win Over Auburn
The South Carolina Gamecocks women's basketball team broke a team record for the longest winning streak in program history as they secured their 30th straight victory on Thursday night by defeating the Auburn Tigers on their home floor.
In the opening minutes, the Gamecocks struggled offensively, making only six of their first seven shots from the floor. However, these misses weren't due to bad shot selections, as South Carolina had good ball movement going from outside the perimeter to the paint area. Victaria Saxton, in particular, was extremely active in establishing good positioning on the floor and getting on the offensive glass, as she secured five rebounds in just the first five minutes of the contest, replicating her performance from the last time these two teams met.
As the first quarter progressed, they saw shots fall as the Auburn Tigers were dealing with their offensive mishaps. The Gamecocks took advantage by getting out in transition and having everyone run the floor, which led to one-quarter of their first-half points coming from the fast break. This carried over into the second quarter, as Zia Cooke took advantage of multiple Auburn turnovers and converted it into five total points in the final couple of minutes in the first half, which helped propel South Carolina to a 21-point advantage at the break.
In the final 20 minutes, the Gamecocks continued to rebound the ball and create opportunities to score, as they shot over 68 percent from the floor in the second half and secured ten more rebounds than the Auburn Tigers. The large lead allowed almost all Gamecocks' backups to see significant action, with Sania Feagin and Bree Hall combining for 15 total points while on the floor.
The undefeated Gamecocks will now gear up for what's sure to be a nationally anticipated game on Sunday afternoon as they welcome the LSU Tigers to the Colonial Life Arena.
