BREAKING: South Carolina To Retire Alshon Jeffery's No. 1 Jersey This Fall
In the golden years of the Steve Spurrier era, many great players from the state of South Carolina decided to stay home and help the Gamecocks become a more nationally-recognized program, players like Marcus Lattimore, Jadeveon Clowney, and Stephon Gilmore. One other player who left his mark on the program was Alshon Jeffery, a wide receiver from Calhoun County High School in St. Matthews, SC, who according to school release on Monday afternoon, will see his No. 1 jersey retired during halftime of the Mississippi State game on September 23rd.
Jeffery had a decorated career in the garnet and black threads, as per the school record books, he ranks third all-time in receptions with 183, second all-time in receiving yards with 3,042, and first all-time in receiving touchdowns with 23. Jeffery will become just the sixth Gamecock in program history to have his jersey or jersey number retired, joining former teammate Jadeveon Clowney, who saw his No. 7 jersey retired during the halftime proceedings of the Georgia State game this past season.
