When Shane Beamer was asked in gaggle interview during a men's basketball game back on January 21st whether or not he was concerned about the defensive end position, he answered with no hesitation, "Yes." While South Carolina saw some positive developments from Spring practice with Desmond Umeozulu being mentioned as a freshman who was standing out and Bryan Thomas Jr. dominating in the Garnet and Black Spring game, there's still some questions regarding the overall depth of the position.

One of those questions has revolved around early enrollee Monteque Rhames, who was arrested back in early February on charges that included obstruction of justice and carrying weapons on school property. Shane Beamer had mentioned at his Charlotte Welcome Home Tour stop on Wednesday that right now the decision to allow Rhames back into the program was above his head due to the crime having taken place on school property.

Based on a recent report from Phil Kornblut of SportsTalk Media Network, Rhames might not wait to see how the process plays out if he wants to see the field, his former high school coach Reggie Kennedy told SportsTalk that playing at a junior college is an option for the South Carolina native.

This potential path would hold both some positives and negatives as Rhames would not only get to see the field in his first year out of high school, but also have an opportunity to learn from his mistake he made back in the Winter. For the Gamecocks, it would be another blow to their defensive end position and would make it even more imperative that they add another edge rusher in the transfer portal.
