Observations From South Carolina's Spring Football Game
Shane Beamer and the South Carolina Gamecocks officially concluded their Spring slate with their annual Garnet and Black Spring game on Saturday night. The Black team prevailed in a spontaneously formed overtime period by a final score of 19-17. Although we didn't see either side of the ball use their playbooks to the fullest extent, there were certain nuggets to take away from this intra-squad scrimmage between fellow Gamecocks.
Quarterback Spencer Rattler looked much more comfortable in this game, especially compared to last season. Coach Shane Beamer echoed this sentiment in his postgame presser and confirmed that Dowell Loggains is already positively impacting the fifth-year gunslinger. LaNorris Sellers was electric tonight with his scrambling ability and also showed that he possesses a solid arm, making himself look like the future at the quarterback position.
Wide receivers Antwane "Juice" Wells and Eddie Lewis were impressive in how often they created separation in their one-on-one matchups and could spearhead the Gamecocks' deep passing game at their position. Trey Knox's big frame and ability to move at his size has already made him a favorite target of Rattler's, as on Saturday night, he caught six passes for forty yards and a touchdown in the first half alone. While the running back position was offered few good opportunities, Dakereon Joyner was arguably the best out of the bunch and looked like he had been playing the position his whole life.
On the offensive line, it must be remembered that there were diverse lineups, and with Jakai Moore being absent for personal reasons and Jaylen Nichols leaving the game early, it only made the group thinner. However, this group must improve over the next four and a half months to unlock the offense's full potential, especially in run blocking.
Defensively, multiple individual players stood out in my eyes, as the entire linebacker group showcased their ability to help in rush and pass defense. At the same time, Elijah Davis wreaked havoc on the offensive line all night. In the defensive secondary, Jalon Kilgore, DQ Smith, and Nick Emmanwori all made plays close to the line of scrimmage and downfield in terms of attacking ballcarriers and receivers.
All in all, it was not a perfect performance by either side, which is probably exactly what Shane Beamer and his coaching staff would want to see heading into the Summer.
