College Football Analyst Names Pete Lembo Special Teams Coach of the Year
Since his addition to the Gamecocks as their Special Teams Coordinator back in the 2020 offseason, Pete Lembo has led one of the best special teams units in the country. His efforts in the "third phase" of the game have long been praised as he has effectively turned South Carolina's special team units into Beamer Ball 2.0.
After another great year with the Gamecocks, Lembo has earned some recognition from one of the sports most respected pundits, as he's been named Special Teams Coach of the Year by college football analyst Phil Steele. The distinction comes with good reason, as Lembo's unit was the most efficient in the nation, according to footballoutsiders.com.
Throughout the 2022 season, the Gamecocks' special teams unit consistently performed at the top of Division I football, as South Carolina blocked six kicks and five punts, which ranked third and second in college football, respectively. The team also scored five special teams touchdowns in 2022.
The Gamecocks punting and kicking unit were also top notch, as punter Kai Kroger was named a First Team All-SEC selection and an All-American by multiple outlets. On the field goal unit, Kicker Mitch Jeter converted on all eleven of his field goal attempts this past season, being one of just two kickers in the country to accomplish this feat.
Steele's commendation further proves that Lembo is one of the best assistants in college football. With his recent extension keeping him in Columbia through 2025, South Carolina is set to produce some of the best special team units in the sport for years to come.
