ICYMI: SEC Expected To Implement 9-Game Conference Schedule By 2026
This past Spring and Summer, there was a ton of discussion within the SEC conference regarding their future scheduling model, with everyone agreeing that it needed to change with Texas and Oklahoma joining the conference later this June, but not being able to come to a consensus on what model to use. Eventually, the athletic directors and presidents of the member institutions agreed to a 1-7-7 model for at least the 2024 season and decided they would discuss the future of the model at a later date.
It appears though that it's only a matter of time before the SEC decides to go to a 3-6-6 or nine-game scheduling model, as Texas Athletic Director Chris Del Conte told Inside Texas on Wednesday that the conference is working towards having that model in effect by 2026.
“We’re working on going to a nine-game schedule, but we have a ways to go with that. I would say this year we have an eight-game schedule. The following year, we have another eight-game schedule. Then we’ll look at going into a nine-game conference schedule.”
