Could Dante Reno Get Playing Time This Season?
Unlike the last two seasons for South Carolina, the quarterback competition will be wide open this Spring. The Gamecocks staff is looking at Auburn transfer Robbie Ashford, who is seeking a chance to potentially start in Columbia, LaNorris Sellers, the early fan favorite, and 3-star 2024 signee Dante Reno, the early dark horse.
Let's look at why Reno may be the guy for the job. He played for two schools during his high school career, and we all know it takes work to pick up the nuances of pro-style offenses in which he's played in, so we know he can pick up a new offense and then execute it. Not to mention that he's the son of a successful college coach, meaning his learning curve will be lower than most typical freshmen.
The poise and accuracy Dante consistently displays on the field should also be noted, especially when the pocket collapses around him. The 5th best player in Connecticut finished his senior season throwing for 2358 yards (64% completion rate) and 20 TD, averaging 262 passing yards per game.
Third and most importantly, Reno has been in the loop with offensive coordinator Dowell Loggins since December 2022. Reno has been woven into the Gamecock culture as much as anyone on the team in his class, and it will be interesting to see how this Spring plays out at the quarterback position.
