Shane Beamer Addresses Hot-Doggate
After a tumultuous week one loss to North Carolina, Shane Beamer made a quick opening statement regarding his thoughts on the game. Part of this opening statement included a small moment where Beamer vented about the chain gang not being ready for the start of the second half, which saw South Carolina attempt an onside kick to try and regain momentum that they lost at the end of the first half.
Of course, knowing how some of the media operate these days, especially on social media, certain people took that blurb from Shane Beamer's 89-second-long opening statement and twisted the context to make it sound like Beamer was scapegoating the chain gang.
In Shane's opening statement at his weekly Tuesday afternoon press conference, he took the time to address the ridiculous backlash he received from some people who, quite frankly, took little to no time at all to do any research on the series of events that unfolded.
"[I] want to clarify any comments from last Saturday night. The chain crew was not our issue on Saturday night; North Carolina was our issue and the way that we played. The point I was trying to make was that's a really really critical play to start the second half when you're gonna surprise onside kick, and it's disappointing that our kickoff team took the field, UNC's kickoff return team took the field, and then our game management comes over and, I didn't make up the hot dog comment, I was literally told the chain crew was in the locker room eating hot dogs," Beamer explained. "So this wasn't me trying to be a smart you-know-what; I was relaying the information that was told to me, which is disappointing because that's basically another way to ice the kicker. That's not an easy kick to make what Mitch did, and I watched coach [Mack] Brown's press conference after the game, and he [said] that they were telling their team to watch out for the onside kick to start the second half. He said he told his team that, so that's an extra timeout for them because the chain crew wasn't out there, and that was the frustrating part for me."
So, for those of you who aspire to one day be sports journalists or sports writers, remember this: always seek out the full context of a situation before drawing conclusions, and learn from those who don't take the liberty to do so.
