ICYMI: Former Gamecock Rico Dowdle Wins Backup RB Job For Dallas Cowboys
August is a pivotal month for players in the NFL, as veteran starters get reacclimatized to the grind that is professional football while younger players try to learn how to be a pro and, in some cases, make a roster. However, there's also a group of players who fall somewhere in the middle, guys who might not start for their team or have to worry about being put on waivers but are fighting for a better position on the depth chart.
One former Gamecock who was in this situation this preseason was Rico Dowdle. Dowdle, a standout during his tenure at South Carolina, has continued to impress in the professional ranks and his team in Dallas Cowboys, who earlier this week essentially won the job top backup at running back in 2023. During his time with the Gamecocks, Dowdle was a consistent and dynamic force on the field.
His speed, agility, and power made him an effective weapon in South Carolina's offensive arsenal. Although his stats might not be eye-popping due to the rash of injuries he suffered in college, Dowdle's impact was felt whenever he was on the field. In his four years at the University of South Carolina, Dowdle accumulated 2,167 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns, along with 483 receiving yards and three touchdowns.
After going undrafted in 2020, Dowdle signed with the Cowboys as a free agent and has worked diligently to make his mark in the NFL. Dowdle's journey from the Gamecocks to the Cowboys is a testament to his resilience and determination. With this promotion, Dowdle is set to see more touches and has a prime opportunity to showcase his skills on a larger stage.
