The South Carolina Gamecocks have struggled to find and maintain consistency on the offensive side of the ball since the second to last year of the Steve Spurrier era in 2014. In the seven seasons since the head ball coach's abrupt retirement, South Carolina has gone through four different offensive coordinators and only averaged more than 25 points per game on two occasions: 2018 and 2022.

Heading into the 2023 season, the Gamecocks are bringing in their fifth offensive coordinator in eight years in Dowell Loggains, whom many fans hope will streamline the offense and, thus, make life easier for star quarterback Spencer Rattler. At his weekly press conference on Tuesday, Shane Beamer was asked if he sees any similarities between Dowell Loggains and a play caller he idolized growing up in the sport, Steve Spurrier. Pondering his answer for a second, Shane came up with a way in which the two are alike regarding their football knowledge.

"I think both of them have a great understanding of defenses. Take the specifics of playcalling [and] Dowell understanding defenses and how to attack it, that was one of the greatest things about coach Spurrier was just knowing what coverage [the defense] was in and exactly how to attack it," Beamer explained.

The more he thought about his answer, Beamer also recalled a personality trait that the two possess.

"Dowell, I don't know if he's quite [like] Steve Spurrier [in terms of] the swagger that coach Spurrier has, but Dowell's got a little bit of a swagger to him also, which I like," Shane lamented. "There's only one head ball coach, but certainly, there's a lot of qualities that I think Dowell has that hopefully will be on display this Saturday night and throughout the season."
