Shane Beamer On Challenges Of Studying Georgia's Offense
One aspect of game preparations that football fans can sometimes forget about is how a team goes about studying their upcoming opponent. When a team plays a football game later in the season, this facet is much easier because your opponent has put several games on tape with the same players in the lineup, the same coaches more often than not, and they have obvious tendencies you can pick up on.
However, facing a team in the early part of the season makes film study a lot more challenging. That challenge is three-fold this week for Shane Beamer and the Gamecocks ahead of their nationally televised matchup with the Georgia Bulldogs. The Bulldogs have a new offensive coordinator-quarterback duo in Mike Bobo and Carson Beck, respectfully, and so far, haven't faced any notable challengers on their schedule compared to South Carolina, which has allowed them to be more conservative in terms of their play-calling on both sides of the ball.
During his weekly Tuesday press conference, Shane Beamer dove into the obstacles that a team with new parts brings regarding strategy.
"They're gonna do what they do. Obviously, they have a new coordinator with coach [Mike] Bobo, but the system has stayed the same. Mike was there last year on staff, so they're not gonna reinvent everything when they return the bulk of the offense. Certainly, you study [Carson Beck] and maybe throws that he makes that Stetson [Bennett] didn't, or maybe concepts they've run a little bit more of the last two weeks, but it's a challenge because they've had two blowout wins two weeks in a row, so they haven't had to do much offensively from a schematic standpoint," Beamer explained. "You also know that they've had a whole offseason too [where] there's some things that they haven't shown the first two games that we've got to be ready for and adjust to on Saturday."
It's already tough enough knowing that the Gamecocks are at a disadvantage on paper in terms of the overall talent that Georgia possesses, and it's even worse when there's an argument to be made that the Bulldogs will have a game-planning advantage to a certain degree as well. We'll find out if the efforts of South Carolina's staff will be enough to work around this dilemma when they take the field in Athens on Saturday.
