Shane Beamer Talks O-line Improvement, Injuries, & LaNorris Sellers
Last Saturday night, Shane Beamer walked into the media room extremely disappointed at what his team could not accomplish against the North Carolina Tar Heels. The vibes were much better tonight, as the head coach described this game as going about the way you would want it to against an FCS opponent.
Beamer specifically noted that he was happy for all of the young guys on the team, as seemingly everyone got in the game at some point in the second half. However, he was disappointed with how the team finished with the turnover and the easy late score for the Paladins. Regarding the injuries coming out of the game, Shane said offensive lineman JonDarius Morgan fell awkwardly on his wrist. Running back Bradley Dunn was also lost early in the game, as was Ahmarean Brown, who was held out as a precaution due to a hamstring issue, and Kennan Nelson Jr., who suffered an upper-body injury and left the game but should be fine according to Beamer.
From Shane's standpoint, the offensive line did a much better job protecting Spencer Rattler this week, which showed up in some aspects on the stat sheet. He also felt like they did well in the running game but was unhappy with the amount of penalties the unit racked up, five for 35 yards, to be exact. The game plan for tonight was to help the offensive tackles through more chip blocks, move the pocket for Rattler, attack the perimeter, and challenge the Paladins to make plays in space, and that plan worked out well for the Gamecocks.
When Beamer was asked about the debut of freshman quarterback LaNorris Sellers, who threw two touchdowns in the second half of Saturday night's game, he thought for a second, smiling, and simply said, "I thought he looked pretty dang good. I don't know about you." Sellers, however, wasn't the only freshman to make an impact in tonight's game, as freshmen receivers Nyckoles Harbor and Tyshawn Russell both caught a touchdown pass from the South Carolina native.
Beamer made it a point to mention that there were some highly touted junior and senior prospects in town for tonight's game, knowing that seeing true freshmen not just being given an opportunity to play but also making plays happen on the field is an excellent pitch in terms of both playing time and development.
