Shane Beamer Updates Status Of Juice Wells, Other Injured Gamecocks
Multiple negative factors can profoundly affect an offense and, at times, cause it to be inefficient. Gamecock fans might immediately point to an inconsistent offensive line and lack of a running game as the main culprits of South Carolina's offensive rollercoaster they've had the first three weeks of the 2023 season.
It also doesn't help that one of the Gamecocks' star offensive playmakers, wide receiver Antwane "Juice" Wells, has been dealing with an unfortunate and nagging lower-body injury since preseason camp, an injury that seemed to be reaggravated this past Saturday against Georgia. Wells left after just one offensive possession this past weekend, and on Tuesday, Shane Beamer, at his weekly press conference, gave the latest on Juice's status ahead of a pivotal matchup against the Mississippi State Bulldogs.
"Juice will be out this week; he will not be able to play. He did see a specialist this morning in Charlotte, and [it] was a good visit as well. [It's] nothing that is season-ending, [but] is something that [made us] feel like the best thing is just to rest it for this week. We'll see about next week for Tennessee, and then we'll have an open week after that. We'll certainly reevaluate things as we get more into next week."
To add to the somewhat negative news on Juice Wells, Beamer also said that Ahmarean Brown didn't practice today and is questionable but was in good spirits on the sidelines and is expected to be able to practice in some capacity tomorrow. With both guys either playing at less than 100 percent or possibly missing the Mississippi State game outright, some other wideouts will have to step up, guys that, in a way, have been preparing as such for a while now.
"We certainly can't ride Xavier Legette until his legs fall off," Beamer lamented. "O'Mega [Blake] has done some nice things - We need to play Nyckoles Harbor and Tyshawn Russell more, and we will. I know I sound like a broken record, but we need to get those guys in there more."
In terms of other injured Gamecocks, edge defenders Jatius Geer and Tyreek Johnson are both questionable but are trending in the right direction as both guys have practiced in some capacity this week and are trending in the right direction along with Brown.
