2025 4-star ATH Darrell "Duke" Johnson Dishes On Recent Offer From South Carolina
Over the past couple of weeks, Shane Beamer and his coaching staff have been scouring through the ranks of the 2025 and 2026 recruiting classes to try to keep up and stay ahead of their competition. One of those offers went out to 2025 athlete Darrell "Duke" Johnson, a native of Eastman, GA, who had received plenty of Power 5 offers already, but had yet to receive one from an SEC school until two Thursdays ago.
Johnson conveyed in a conversation I had with him late this week that the offer took him back a little bit, considering the prestige of an SEC offer, and that he likes the long-term outlook for the Gamecocks.
"Initially, I just kind of thought, 'Wow, that's a great program,' and I have been waiting on a big SEC school. I really like the program [and] I think that they are a great team headed in a good direction. They'll only get better."
Johnson also told me that he's being recruited by South Carolina as a defensive back, meaning that if he chose to come to Columbia, he would be under the tutelage of defensive backs coach Torrian Gray, who's displayed the ability to both recruit and develop talented players in his short time at South Carolina. With an offer now having been dispensed to Duke, he'll be looking to visit the program sometime in the future to get a closer look at what the Gamecocks have to offer.
"I am definitely looking forward to checking out [South Carolina] and keeping them in mind in my [recruiting] journey."
