How Shane Beamer & His Staff Have Recruited Each Position Since Arrival

South Carolina's Football staff has recruited in the top 20 range since their arrival, but how does this break down when it comes to specific positions?

The South Carolina Gamecocks have seen their national perception in a positive direction shift over the past couple of years. With the football program playing in two straight bowl games for the first time since the 2017 and 2018 seasons and having won three games against Top 15 opponents this past Fall, more and more national-level prospects are taking notice.

This led to South Carolina landing their best recruiting class in over a decade in the previous recruiting cycle and could potentially lead to a Top 12 in this current cycle. While big-time targets like Daniel Hill, Jalewis Solomon, and Dylan Stewart remain on the Gamecocks board, I wanted to go big-picture and see how well Shane Beamer and his staff have done on paper so far when it comes to bringing talent into Columbia and here are the numbers I compiled via On3's Industry Rankings:

*This doesn't include the 2021 recruiting class, transfers, or players who've since transferred out, but it does include the current 2024 class*

QB: Three 4-stars

RB: Two 4-stars

WR: One 5-star, one 4-star, and seven 3-stars

TE: One 4-star and three 3-stars

OL: Four 4-stars and six 3-stars

DL: Three 4-stars and four 3-stars

LB: Three 4-stars and one 3-star

DB: Six 4-stars and five 3-star

When adding up all the high school signees from the past two cycles and the Gamecocks' current commits from the 2024 cycle, South Carolina has landed one 5-star, 23 four-stars, and 26 three-stars. That gives South Carolina a blue chip ratio of 48 percent through the first two and a half cycles for Shane Beamer and his coaching staff. That's just two percentage points short of the 50 percent threshold that's viewed by the recruiting industry as being necessary if you want to contend for titles, as no team in the modern recruiting era (late 90's to early 00s) has ever won a national championship without hitting that 50 percent blue chip mark.

In terms of positions where recruiting could improve, the wide receiver and tight end positions stand out the most, with running back and defensive line fitting into the group behind that if you want to nit-pick. However, from an overall recruiting standpoint, Shane Beamer and the Gamecocks are trending towards remaining in the top half of the conference for the foreseeable future, which, combined with their ability to develop talent, could help South Carolina take the next step for the foreseeable future.
