After South Carolina landed Wofford transfer BJ Mack in late April, Gamecock fans, and probably most analysts, assumed that Lamont Paris and his staff were done with the 2023 recruiting cycle. As it turned out, however, that wasn't the case, as South Carolina made national waves on Sunday afternoon by landing the commitment of combo guard Austin Herro, the younger brother of former NBA Sixth Man of the Year and Kentucky star Tyler Herro.

While Austin's recruitment might've not garnered the fanfare that his older brothers did several years ago, the Wisconsin native's senior season film from Whitnall High School shows that he possesses several traits that would appeal to Lamont Paris' overall coaching philosophy.

Herro's strengths primarily lie on the defensive end of the floor, where he displays consistent awareness and good hands, which helps him telegraph plays and steal the ball, both as an on-ball and off-ball defender. Even if Herro cannot steal the ball, he has an above-average wingspan for his 6'2 frame, which allows him to quickly take up space in shooting windows and alter the trajectory of his opponents' shots. If opponents are lucky enough to get a shot off away from Herro, Austin isn't afraid to do some of the dirty work on the glass, which is commendable considering his lack of size for that kind of task.

Austin can also be a sniper from three-point range on the offensive end of the floor, where his quick release allows him to step-and-gather his shot, create space through a subtle step-back move, and also take Meechie Johnson range three-pointers around 30 feet away from the basket. Overall, Herro is a modern-day 3-and-D guard who doesn't necessarily wow anyone with his physical intangibles or athletic measurables, but his willingness to take chances, along with his defensive IQ, makes it easy to see why a coach with Lamont Paris' background would want him on their squad.
