ICYMI: JUCO Post Sakima Walker Commits To Dawn Staley & Gamecocks
No team in the entire sport of women's college basketball suffered a mass exodus to the extent that South Carolina did at season's end, as seven players either exhausted their eligibility completely or declared for the WNBA Draft with five Gamecocks being selected. The biggest loss in terms of star power by far was Carolina's star center in Aliyah Boston, and while the Gamecocks have the SEC's Sixth Woman of the Year returning in Kamilla Cardoso, the rising senior from Brazil can't do it all by herself at the five-spot.
So Dawn Staley set out to find immediate help, and secured that on Friday afternoon when Junior College Player of the Year Sakima Walker committed to the Gamecocks. Walker averaged 16.6 points, 8.1 rebounds and 1.5 blockers per game for Northwest Florida State College, leading them to an NJCAA National Championships earlier this year.
Walker originally began her college career at Rutgers, where she averaged 4 points, 2.5 rebounds and 0.4 blocks per game in two seasons with the Scarlet Knights. Sakima will slide right on into a backup role behind Cardoso and will bring towering height for position, along with a unique blend of Power 6 and college championship experience.
