Despite Stanford and Cal being reported as the two schools that are connected to the ACC for the next wave of realignment, we learned on Tuesday in a report from Yahoo Sports' Ross Dellenger that there is a third school.

Dellenger confirmed that along with considering Stanford and Cal, the ACC is also looking into the idea of adding SMU. The Dallas based school was at one point viewed as a top candidate to join the Pac-12 along with San Diego State, but obviously following the departures of almost everyone that is no longer a viable option.

There are travel challenges that need to be ironed out as Dellenger explained, citing that the ACC will need more money from ESPN or the new programs will have to accept a partial revenue share.

However, financial complications go much deeper. To offset the additional travel costs of acquiring Stanford, Cal and/or SMU, current ACC members will need additional revenue from the network, or Stanford and Cal would have to agree to enter the league for a partial share — conversations of which are ongoing.

While entering the league at a partial share isn't ideal for any of the programs, it is something that we have seen occurring in other conferences with some of the new Big 12 schools doing it as well as Oregon and Washington.

As for the other two Pac-12 programs in Washington State and Oregon State, their best option continues to appear to be the Mountain West or the American.
