Over the past few days, Stanford has lost names such as Tommy Troy, Quinn Mathews, and Alberto Rios to the MLB Draft which was expected. However, on Tuesday the Cardinal learned of a very unexpected departure.

Two-way star Braden Montgomery is expected to enter his name in the transfer portal according to D1Baseball's Kendall Rogers. The news comes as a major surprise for Stanford, as head coach David Esquer recently spoke extremely highly of Montgomery, even calling him a "cornerstone" of the team moving forward.

Montgomery hit  an impressive .336 with 17 home runs and 61 RBIs, while also showing the ability to throw up to 97-98 on the mound. He was ranked as D1Baseball's No. 5 2024 College Prospect entering '23.

Montgomery is currently playing for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team with Stanford catcher Malcolm Moore, as they are set to take on Japan in the championship series.
