Texas A&M Lands Verbal Commitment Of Central Michigan DB Transfer Trey Jones
Texas A&M has added another transfer for the 2024 season prior to Wednesday's Early Signing Period.
Central Michigan safety Trey Jones verbally committed to the Aggies after a brief stint in the transfer portal. He chose A&M over other SEC programs, including LSU, Tennessee and Georgia.
Jones will have one year of eligibility remaining with the Aggies. He should fill the void left behind by starter Demani Richardson, who will play his final game with A&M next week at NRG Stadium at the TaxAct Texas Bowl against No. 20 Oklahoma State.
The 6-2, 215-pound defensive back is coming off a stalwart season with the Chippewas, totaling 66 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, an interception and a forced fumble. In 2022, Jones racked up 85 tackles, 6.5 tackles for losses and recorded a pair of picks.
Jones was also voted defensive captain twice during his five seasons at Central Michigan.
Experience made him a household name in the portal, but Jones wasn't the most sought-after defensive back during high school, receiving little interest from Power Five programs. Jones' most significant offer came from South Alabama, right down the road from his hometown of Wetumpka.

Talent-wise, Jones offers skills similar to Richardson's, but perhaps more upside in coverage. He also has experience in the nickel, which could allow Bryce Anderson to move back deeper into coverage for certain formations.
Jones is now the fifth transfer to verbally commit to Texas A&M, joining cornerback Will Lee III (Kansas State), linebacker Alex Howard (Youngstown State) and receivers Javon Harvey (Old Dominion) and Cyrus Allen (Louisiana Tech).
The Aggies close out the Early Signing Period under first-year coach Mike Elko on Wednesday, and the 2023 season at NRG Stadium on Dec. 27 at 8 p.m.
