Aggies QB Conner Weigman 'Poised For Big Year' Under OC Bobby Petrino
Last season, unbeknownst to the college football world, former Tennessee quarterback Hendon Hooker was a star in the making.
Hooker blossomed into a third-round NFL Draft pick and potential Heisman Trophy finalist until a late-season injury ended his push. The "SEC Now" panel pondered who could be the 2023 version of Hooker, and Greg McElroy believes Texas A&M Aggies quarterback Conner Weigman could having a coming-out party next season.
"It's partly because you can't play quarterback by yourself," McElroy said Thursday. "He's got a tremendous supporting cast, and now he has an offensive coordinator that is going to focus exclusively on putting him in position to be successful."
McElroy delved into Bobby Petrino's history with quarterbacks like Arkansas' Ryan Mallett and Louisville's Lamar Jackson, the latter of whom won the Heisman Trophy in 2016.
The former Alabama quarterback said Petrino had a way of making quarterbacks in his system "really comfortable."
"His understanding of the position and being able to adequately put him in places to be successful and comfortable," McElroy said. "He's poised for a big year."
