Aggies Open as Huge Favorites Over New Mexico
It's been a long wait, but it's almost here. That wait has seemed even longer considering the 5-7 finish by the Aggies last season. The wait for reconciliation is finally over, as A&M kicks off its 2023 campaign against the New Mexico Lobos. Yes, it's game week finally.
At least on paper, the Aggies are considered huge favorites for their Week 1 matchup, but does that really mean anything? As was made painfully apparent last season, point spreads don't mean anything. The Aggies were favored by 18 points against Appalachian State last year and well, we won't go there.
The Aggies are currently 38-point favorites over the Lobos for the Sept. 2 tilt at Kyle Field. And it seems like a good matchup for the Aggies to try and build some confidence and momentum. And for new offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino to get his feet wet.
New Mexico isn't good. New Mexico hasn't been good for a long time The Lobos have averaged just 2.5 wins over the past 15 seasons and won more than four games just twice in that span. At least Appalachian State has a recent history of winning. Oops, sorry, I said we wouldn't go there.
The bottom line is the Lobos should be an easy foe, especially at home for the Aggies. And I can't think of anything more confidence-boosting than a 40-plus point win in Week 1 for A&M, regardless of the opponent. The Aggies are supposed to win. The Aggies will win. Will they win by more than 38? That's for the gamblers to wager on.
