Aggies Enter Final Round at Salem Regional in 8th Place
The Texas A&M men's golf team is not having the week it had hoped for entering the NCAA Salem Regional at The Cliffs of Keowee Falls in Salem, South Carolina.
After shooting a 7-under during Monday's opening round, the Aggies shot just 5-under on Tuesday at the par-72, 7,126-yard course for a two-round total of 12-under 564.
That's 11 strokes below the cutoff to advance to the NCAA Championships and good enough for just eighth place in the tournament. The top five teams from each of the six regionals advance.
Aggies SEC foe Arkansas leads the Salem Regional heading into Wednesday's final round with a 39-under 537. Georgia Tech is on its heels with a 32-under 544. North Carolina (-25) follows, then New Mexico (-25) and Northern Illinois (-23). The Aggies are tied with San Diego State (-12) in eighth place with Georgia Southern (-18) and Clemson (-16) between them and the coveted fifth-place spot.
Leading the way for the Aggies is Daniel Rodrigues who shot the A&M's best round on Tuesday with a 3-under 69, by virtue of six birdies. He's tied for 27th place at 3-under 141.
Sam Bennett and Phichakson Maichon both logged 1-under rounds of 71, while Bennett has the Aggies' lone eagle at the par-5 16th. Bennett enters Wednesday tied for 22nd at 4-under 140. Maichon is tied for 27th at 3-under 141.
The Aggies start Wednesday's round from No. 1 at 7:55 a.m. CT, and are paired with Clemson and San Diego State.
