Detroit Lions quarterback Hendon Hooker has been adamant that he appreciates the University of Tennessee and the people of Knoxville. They welcomed him after Hooker transferred from Virginia Tech and assumed the starting role in 2021. He quickly became a fan favorite, and Tennessee fans consider him the best quarterback to come through the program since the legendary Peyton Manning.

The Detroit Lions selected Hooker with the No. 68 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, and he signed a four-year contract worth $5.7 million in guarantees. After securing that wealth, Hooker decided to give back to the community that embraced him with open arms. He announced a youth football camp in Knoxville scheduled for July 8. Hooker is still continuing rehab from an ACL tear he sustained against South Carolina. Hooker was filmed doing a variety of balancing workouts that stabilize his knee. Restoring full confidence in that knee will be critical in his NFL development, and he recognizes that. Hooker has repeatedly emphasized that he will be ready for week one if his team needs him. However, Lions head coach Dan Campbell has repeatedly confirmed that the organization views Hooker's rookie season as a redshirt opportunity, one where he can sit behind current starter Jared Goff and gain knowledge before preparing for a potential starting opportunity in 2023. Detroit isn't ready to move off Goff yet, but Hooker will prepare and stay ready for any reality.
