Can Hendon Hooker Be Detroit's Guy?
As the pre-draft process played out, it seemed that Hendon Hooker was no doubt going into the first round of the NFL Draft. Five quarterbacks seemingly were destined for the first night. Bryce Young, CJ Stroud, Anthony Richardson, Will Levis, and Hendon all awaited on Thursday night.
Young, Stroud, and Richardson saw their dreams realized on the big night, each going in the top five. However, there was a development that spelled bad news for Hooker. Levis began to slide, and the consensus top-ten pick was shown in the draft room as teams continued to pass.
The reason that Hooker was affected is that he came in behind Levis in most rankings, meaning Hendon would likely need to hear Will Levis's name called to hear his own. On the second night, both Levis and Hooker found out where they'd be going. For the Vols Quarterback, that place is Detroit.
The Lions are a very interesting spot for the 25-year-old. Detroit is coming off of a 9-win season that saw them nearly squeak into the postseason. The reason they did not, however, was the defense. The passing attack, led by Jared Goff, was sensational.
As Goff looks to build on this, he will now also have the task of mentoring Hooker and teaching him the Detroit offense. Only three years younger, Hooker will not be the typical young, spry rookie. There is no doubt Hooker will have many questions for Goff. He's an avid learner and now prepares to wear the shoe on the other foot after mentoring Joe Milton III last season.
Hendon's early career action will be determined by how Goff plays. If he continues to thrive, he will stay in there under center. If the offense takes a step back and Detroit needs a spark, Hooker may get thrown in the fire, just like some of the other rookies will. One thing is for certain; the Tennessee product will be ready when his number is called.
