Prospect Fits: Four-Star CB Aaron Scott Jr. Fits Tennessee's Scheme Well

2024 four-star corner Aaron Scott Jr. included the Tennessee Volunteers in his top five, and he fits their defensive plans quite well.
In this story:

The Tennessee Volunteers have been recruiting the defensive backfield hard during the past few cycles. 2024 four-star corner Aaron Scott Jr. cut his recruitment down to five schools on Thursday, and the Vols found themselves on that list alongside several other major powers. Scott is an Ohio native that the Buckeyes are after, and it will be hard for Tennessee to pull him away from the north. However, his talent is worth their time.

Scott is a pure-man cover corner that excels at pressing wideouts at the line of scrimmage. The coaching staff at Springfield High School has felt comfortable leaving him in one-on-one situations for the past few years, and his track record supports their belief. He does a strong job engaging from the snap, punching the receiver's shoulder pads and creating a natural leverage advantage. From there, Scott works his body into their frame, forcing receiver's toward the sideline and making quarterbacks make difficult throws. An outside-the-numbers deep ball is one of the worst offensive approaches. Usually, defenses must shade a safety toward an X-receiver to take away action over the top, but Scott's natural hands and technique allow him to handle it himself.

He measures in at 5-11.5 and 165 pounds, a size discrepancy against most Power-5 wideouts. Nonetheless, Tennessee can deal with that. There are few "specimens" that are going to beat Scott with their traits downfield, meaning offenses must attack down low. Scott extends offensive drives by simply being on the field - the more chances an offense has, the more chances they have to make a mistake. Tennessee's biggest issue was allowing explosive plays - getting Scott in the fold helps eliminate those.
