Kaleb Beasley Signs With Tennessee
Early national signing day is upon us, and the Tennessee Volunteers are hoping to finish strong. They've recruited at a high rate under head coach Josh Heupel and brought in some major difference-makers in their 2023 signing class. Volunteer Country will provide readers with an in-depth breakdown of each signee.
Corner Kaleb Beasley is the ninth commit to turn in their national letter of intent. He is the No. 154 player in the cycle, according to 247Sports Composite Rankings. Take a look at what the Vols are getting.
Prospect: Kaleb Beasley
Projected Position: Boundary Corner
Vitals: 6-0 and 180 pounds
School: Lipscomb Academy (Nashville, Tennessee)
Frame: Height and weight check the box for an SEC corner. Able to play physical while maintaining athleticism and keeping a low center of gravity. Doesn't have the longest arms, which will be used against him for the rest of his career. He measured a 5-10 wingspan before his junior year, though that could have changed by now.
Athleticism: Beasley clocked in a 4.50-second forty-yard dash during his sophomore season of high school and looks to be hovering around the mid-4.4s on tape. Though he doesn't have the length most top-end outside corners possess, Beasley makes up for it with impressive leaping ability. He's a standout basketball player who averaged 19 points per game on the hardwood as a junior. Beasley often high-points the football in traffic, leaping above receivers to haul in a catch with his hands.
Instincts: Lipscomb employs several defensive concepts that ensure their defensive backs are prepared for the college level. He is comfortable playing quarters, Cover-2, and man coverage. Lipscomb didn't play a ton of Cover-3 in his junior season, but he played some of it to begin his high school career. In different defensive calls, you must adjust your tracking and steps accordingly. Beasley knows what routes to take to the football when it's in the air and how to play receivers when going from man to zone.
Polish: Beasley separates himself with his nuanced footwork and technique. He's a ready-made press man corner that is comfortable alone on an island. Beasley packs a good punch in his hands and gets the better of light-chested receivers at the line of scrimmage, forcing them to redirect before the route has begun. When Beasley can't outmuscle his matchup, he chops his feet and maintains the flexibility to turn and move with the target abruptly.
Bottom Line: Beasley has put together a body of work in high school that few corners in this class can rival. The pedigree, competitive edge, athleticism, and refinement are all there, and he was a premium target for this Tennessee coaching staff.
