No. 14 Longhorns Take Care of ACU in 20-0 Run Rule Victory
If you're a team that finds itself in the hunt to host a regional in the NCAA Tournament, taking care of business in midweek games is a must. The Texas Longhorns (27-12, 8-4) are keenly aware of this and picked up a dominant win on Tuesday over the Abilene Christian Wildcats (24-12).
The Wildcats came to Austin looking to put up a strong fight against the Longhorns and potentially even come away with the upset win. However, that was far from the case as Texas had no trouble dispatching the Wildcats in what was a 20-0 shutout, seven-inning affair.
It was an offensive clinic for the Longhorns as they put up three or more runs in their six innings on offense. They started things off with a bang in the first inning as Garret Guillemette launched a two out, two-run home run followed by Porter Brown going deep himself to give Texas the early 3-0 lead.
From there it was all Longhorns as they put up eight runs in the second, four runs in the third and five runs in the sixth in the blowout win. Perhaps the best performance at the plate came from Jared Thomas, who went 2-for-2 with a walk and four RBIs.
Meanwhile on the mound, the Longhorns pitching staff was just as dominant as the offense. Kobe Minchey started on the mound and gave Texas three shutout innings, limiting the Wildcats to one hit - a leadoff single to start the game.
After Minchey exited the Longhorns bullpen picked up where he left off with four shutout innings, only allowing one more hit. That hit didn't come until the top of the seventh on a double, which saw an excellent relay to gun down a runner at home and preserve the shutout.
What's next for Texas?
The Longhorns are off on Thursday before returning to action again on Friday as they host the Oklahoma Sooners for a three-game conference series. Texas will look to take another conference series to help maintain its position atop the Big 12.
