Longhorns Cruise Past Texas Southern in 18-3 Run-Rule Win

The Longhorns had no trouble dispatching Texas Southern in a bounce-back 18-3 blowout win.

Coming off an embarrassing sweep at the hands of their rival Oklahoma Sooners, the Texas Longhorns needed to respond in strong fashion in a Tuesday night midweek game against the Texas Southern Tigers.

Well, that is exactly what they did as the Longhorns had no trouble taking care of the Tigers in their second straight run-rule win in a midweek game. After beating ACU 20-0 last Wednesday the Longhorns came back and handed Texas Southern an 18-3 loss in seven innings.

The game may very well have gone the full nine innings however a lengthy rain delay in the bottom of the third inning that lasted over an hour likely played a factor in calling the game after seven innings.

It was all Texas before the rain delay as the Longhorns jumped out to an early 5-0 after the second inning, with Garret Guillemette responsible for two of Texas' runs on a sac fly and RBI single.

After the rain delay, though, the Longhorns truly broke the game open in the bottom of the third. Jared Thomas got the scoring started for Texas in the third with a two-run home run to put the Longhorns up 7-0. From there they would put up seven more runs in a nine-run inning, including three RBI doubles and capped off by a Mitchell Daly three-run home run, to take a commanding 14-0 lead.

Texas would go on to add a pair of runs in the fifth and sixth inning, scoring in every inning but the fourth with every starter recording a hit. Pitching wise, it was another strong midweek outing for the Longhorns.

DJ Burke got his first start and gave Texas two shutout innings, with Charlie Hurley following him in relief with one shutout inning in the third. Hurley may have gone another inning but with over an hour long rain delay there was no need to extend him ahead of a possible appearance this weekend against TCU.

The rest of the Longhorns bullpen combined for four innings of three-run baseball, allowing six hits and walking three batters before wrapping up the blowout 18-3 victory.

What's next for Texas?

The Longhorns are back on the road again this weekend as they will be taking on the TCU Horned Frogs starting Friday at 6 p.m. CT.
